China Publishes Coronavirus Genome Data After Latest Beijing Outbreak According to preliminary genomic and epidemiological study results, the virus is from Europe, but it is different from the virus currently spreading in Europe, an official said. Beijing:  China has released genome sequencing data for the coronavirus responsible for a recent outbreak in Beijing, with officials saying on Friday it identified a European strain based on preliminary studies. China, which had been under pressure to make the data public sooner rather than later as COVID-19 cases mounted in the country's capital, said it had also submitted the data to the World Health Organization. Details published on China's National Microbiology Data Center website revealed the genome data was based on three samples - two human and one environmental - collected on June 11. That was the same day Beijing reported its first new local COVID-19 infection in months. In the eight days since, the city has reported a total...

The Latest: Hundreds gather as Confederate monument removed

The Latest: Hundreds gather as Confederate monument removed DECATUR, Ga. — As midnight approached, hundreds gathered in an Atlanta suburb’s town square and watched a crane swoop in and take down a 112-year-old Confederate monument. The stone obelisk was removed from its perch in Decatur, Georgia, on the eve of Juneteenth amid jeers and chants of “Just drop it!” The monument was among those around the country that became flashpoints for protests over police brutality and racial injustice in recent weeks, following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis. The monument to the Lost Cause that was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy was often vandalized and marked by graffiti. The city of Decatur had asked a Georgia judge last week to order the removal of the monument, saying it had become a threat to public safety. The DeKalb County judge ordered the 30-foot (9-meter) obelisk to be removed by June 26 and placed in storage indefinitely. His order was h...

These officials flouted lockdown rules in Myanmar, Malaysia, and the Philippines

These officials flouted lockdown rules in Myanmar, Malaysia, and the Philippines Lockdown restrictions were enforced by many countries across the world to contain the spread of COVID-19, and Southeast Asia has hosted some of the harshest. Most quarantine protocols require residents to stay at home, while mass gatherings are typically prohibited. In Malaysia and the Philippines a particularly strict enforcement of these measures saw thousands of arrests and heavy penalties for violations from March onwards. But a number of government officials were caught violating the very quarantine protocols they were supposed to oversee. Global Voices looked into some of these cases, and their outcomes, which highlight how rules apply to ordinary citizens more than to powerful politicians. We also considered a case in Myanmar that showed how religious discrimination can have a bearing on the application of the law. Malaysia: ‘Disparity in sentencing’ Malaysia has...

Now, unscrupulous politicians blame their political enemies or neighboring governments for the spread of the novel coronavirus. Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,  sounded the alarm  on the threat that mis- and disinformation poses to humanity: “At the WHO, we’re not just battling the virus, we’re also battling the trolls and conspiracy theories that undermine our response,” he said, reiterating that false information can cause confusion and fear.
